Breakaway Cables, known by a host of other names, is a generic term for the multipair cable carrying audio from the mixer to the video camera’s audio inputs and a confidence audio return from the camera’s headphone out jack to the mixer’s external audio monitor input. The cable gets it’s name from the multipin disconnect situated close to the camera end so it may be quickly disconnected from the camera and then quickly reconnected again. It may, in addition, have extra features. Examples include an additional 75 ohm coaxial cable for a video feed from camera to mixer for video monitoring, an extra headphone jack at the camera end fan out, extensions for length options, or an additional mixer end breakaway connector in the cable.
Vark Audio manufactures its own Breakaway Cables. We make these from the highest quality materials. We use gold plated connectors for both the breakaway connector and for the XLR’s. Our standard cables are Mogami 2931 (standard diameter, 3/8 inch) or Mogami 2814 (thin, 3/16 inch) cable. The breakaway connector we use is capable of being disconnected using only one hand, however it locks tightly together when the disconnect ring is released.
Breakaway cables have a hard life. The multipair cable needs to be tough. The Mogami cables we use are very tough. However, in any cable of this type the integrity of the outer covering is the key to its strength. Once the outer covering is allowed to slip relative to the inner conductors the strength is lost and loss of audio soon follows. To strengthen this most stressed point in the cable -- the junction of the multipair cable to the fan out for the camera connectors -- we use a special custom made box. This gives superb strain relief, and is easy to repair should it ever be necessary. A feature which sets our Breakaway Cables well ahead of all others in reliability.
Vark Audio manufactures Breakaway Cables to fit any brand of mixer, whether the mixer has a multipin quick-connect or with an XLR fan out at the mixer end for mixers not having a quick connect method. Our Breakaway Cable may also be constructed with breakaway connectors at both ends of the cable- mixer end and camera end.
